“To be great is to be misunderstood,” wrote Ralph Waldo Emerson, who was born on this date in 1803. Emerson’s quote explains the nature of the astrological sign Scorpio. Symbolized by the scorpion and described in astrology books as “secretive, obsessive and vengeful,” Scorpio seems fearful enough. But Scorpio is also insightful, passionate, and transformative. Its complex emotional nature is often misconstrued in a society more concerned with what’s on the surface than what dwells below. Scorpio’s still waters run deep. Today’s Moon in Scorpio brings a marked emotional intensity and heightened sensitivity. It’s not always easy to look at the truth, but Scorpio will certainly bring some important things to light.

The “Third Man factor” refers to the idea that people facing extreme hardship or imminent death, experience an unseen presence offering comfort and support that helps them survive. Many who have experienced the phenomena say it feels like a Guardian Angel is nearby, lending a sense of serenity and protection. Today the Moon is in Libra, a sign associated with grace and peace. Libra is an air sign that rises above our earthly existence into an ethereal plane. When today’s tranquil Libra Moon encounters bold Mars in Leo, the energy released is like the Third Man factor, although not quite as dramatic. The universe is simply bestowing peaceful courage to overcome any obstacles blocking your way.

Writer, artist and linguistic provocateur Nigel Tomm coined the longest word in English, containing over three million letters and meaning “the current day or date between real and imaginable today.” Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious contains 34 letters and is more familiar than Tomm’s creation. But like his, it’s a nonsense word we don’t really use. With the Sun leaving Cancer for the versatile and verbal sign of Gemini, it’s a great time to play with words. Gemini is an air sign with a mental and communicative nature. Let the Sun in Gemini inspire you to play a word game like Scrabble or Boggle. Or you could always try creating a brand new word out of three million letters!
